Google introduces ‘Smart Reply’ feature to its instant messaging platform Google Hangouts

A new feature has been recently added by tech giant Google to its free service instant messaging platform Google Hangouts. Hangouts was launched by Google in 2013 and was made available to the users for free of cost. The new feature is named ‘Smart Reply’ and it will play a crucial role in saving users time.

“We’re bringing Smart Reply to Hangouts Chat so you can respond to teammates quickly and move projects forward more efficiently, in less time. This launch is part of our ongoing effort to bring intelligent, assistive writing tools to all of G Suite,” Google says in its blog.

‘Smart Reply’ is currently available in English in Hangouts Chat and the feature uses sophisticated machine learning intelligence which is similar to what is being used in Gmail. This technology by Google helps users to recognize that which of the messages are crucial to being replied and the feature also proposes up to 3 different replies. Users can easily select one of the proposed replies and they can either edit them or send them immediately with the Smart Reply text as per their requirement. But one of the major limitations of this feature is that as of now, it is only available in English.

Though Hangouts was launched by Google as a free service in 2013, it was transformed by the firm for businesses. The transformation took place when the company expanded enterprise sales efforts and bought many of the same features in front of the customers which it had internally.

In reply to the fake reports that Google Hangouts will be shut down by the company in the year 2020, Google Hangouts product head Scott Johnston passed a statement. In his statement, Johnston categorically said, “I run Hangouts and this is pretty shoddy reporting. No decisions made about when Hangouts will be shut down. Hangouts users will be upgraded to Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet. Your source is severely misinformed. You can do better.”
