Facebook is again facing tough times after a security bug exposed passwords of Instagram users. The security bug is said to affect the users who tried to access ‘Download Your Data’ feature on Instagram.
“Temporarily, if someone submitted their login information to use the Instagram ‘Download Your Data’ tool, they were able to see their password information in the URL of the page,” the company said in a statement. “This information was not exposed to anyone else, and we have made changes, so this no longer happens.”
Reports say that Instagram has already notified the users that are affected by this security bug and have assured them that they have made necessary changes to prevent such things again in the future. Reports even revealed that the bug not only made the Passwords of users available in the URL of their web browsers but the passwords were sent to Facebook’s servers as well, as Instagram make users log in the app through their Facebook profile.
On the other hand, Instagram has informed all its users that the security bug affected only a small number of people as it was discovered internally by the management team. But the people who have used Instagram’s ‘Download Your Data’ feature on cyber cafes or public computers might have given hackers a window to their profile.
Instagram further informed that if a user has not been notified regarding the security bug over the app, then he/she can relax down as their password wasn’t exposed. Though, all the Instagram users should change their password to be double sure, said Instagram.
The security bug ‘Download Your Data’ feature on Instagram is the latest security mishap that hit Facebook this year. Earlier the social media giant faced biggest data breach involving data firm Cambridge Analytica. Moving six months after that, Facebook’s ‘View As’ feature was compromised which exposed the data of around 50 million users.
